Born in 1962 I came out a very turbulent childhood. Bad foster homes, the streets, juvenile correctional facilities and worse. I spent my teen years homeless on the Mean Streets of NYC and got caught up in the drug trade, spending 2 years in some of New York State’s most dangerous lock ups for drug dealing (’78- ’80). Sports and music have always been the thing that has pulled me out of tough situations and it was in 1980 that I got the gift of plant-based knowledge, yoga, martial arts, etc., and was able to turn the corner on all the bad stuff.
As I’m turning 55 this year I’m in the gym daily, training for Ironman Triathlons and touring constantly with the Cro-Mags and my new band Bloodclot. I haven’t eaten meat, fish, eggs etc. since 1981.
I’m also the author of two books; my memoir “The Evolution of a Cro-Magnon” and “Meat is for Pussies”. Book link: www.johnjoseph.merchnow.com
These days when I’m not on tour or traveling the planet to race I mentor teens who are at risk or locked up as a way to pay it forward. I also volunteer with The Coalition for Healthy School Food and I’m one of their Guest Speakers at schools in the inner city.
